How To Make The Most Of Your Dance Classes

How To Make The Most Of Your Dance Classes

Dance class is an investment. A lot of money, time, and energy go into learning how to dance. The last thing you want is for any of that to go to waste by not making the most of every dance class.

You might think that the best dancers become successful by stretching longer, sweating harder, or practising more than everyone else but that’s not the whole story. If you really want to benefit from your time training in dance, start with your mental attitude toward learning. Here’s how:

Take responsibility

Learning anything is on you, friend. Dance teachers just navigate (and occasionally cheerlead) your dance journey. It’s your job to fuel and drive the car.

What are some ways to do that and take responsibility for learning in dance class?

  • Arrive early
  • Come prepared
  • Practice proper dance class ettiquette
  • Stay focused
  • Take and apply corrections and direction
  • Ask and listen to questions and really absorb the answers
  • Take notes
  • Think ahead
  • Spend more time on the things that need work than the things that don’t
  • Be eager to revisit the basics
  • Listen to your body and keep it in top form with cross-training or conditioning
  • Develop professional relationships with your teachers and mentors
  • Find great teachers you can trust and then actually put your faith in their methods

Make mistakes

Dance class is THE place to mess up because the stage is the last place you’ll want to. Give yourself permission to try big and fail hard in dance and in life.

Discover something new

Notice we didn’t say you should wait to be hit over the head with or bowled over by new information. Make each dance class a quest to learn something new– even about the same old stuff – through listening, watching, trial, or error.

Feel uncomfortable

Your best growth often happens outside your comfort zone. If dance class feels too easy, it’s not always about class level. Are you pushing and stretching yourself in all of the above ways? If not, maybe class seems effortless because you’re not making an effort to push beyond your limitations.

Enjoy the process

Achievement and accolades in dance are awesome but the celebration lasts a blip before you realize that when it’s over, there’s just something new to accomplish. Dance training includes periods of growth and periods of plateau. Make that process the fun part of dance class and you’re golden.

Give thanks

Do celebrate those accomplishments and your dancing body. Be grateful that you get to enjoy the benefits of dance and appreciate the people helping you and motivating you to get the most out of every dance class.

International Dance Academy would like to extend sincere congratulations to former student Jordan Wyllie, who is living the dream and performing at Disneyland in Toyko.

Here are some photos of her as Wendy, Princess Aurora from Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.  We are all so very proud of her.  She was always a hard working dedicated student. She is proof that with determination, devotion and a little sweat, dreams really do come true!  Jordan we wish you every success in the future!  JordanWendyJordanSnowWhite

Never Too Young For Dancing

Time and time again, I hear people ask, “Aren’t they too young to be dancing?” The truth is, as long as you find age appropriate dance classes, no. The ability to start dancing develops in children before they can even form words!  Dance is a primal part of human experience across all cultures and time periods that unites us all no matter our age. The benefits it has on early childhood development is definitely worth understanding.

Physical Development
Physical development is one of the most obvious benefits dance classes have for children. They are learning a great range of motion, body awareness, balance, muscle strength, coordination, and endurance. Movement patterns require the child to use their entire body to reach a level of fitness that is unparalleled by other activities. Through dance classes, kids begin to understand that the possibilities of movement are endless and fun to explore.

Social Awareness children activities
In dance classes, children have the opportunity to learn in a comfortable social setting. They must take turns, work as a group, cooperate, share, understand space, form lines, watch and support one another, perform, and interact. They learn that communication can occur through immediate and effective movement to express an idea. The group dynamic in dance classes also challenges young ones to respect others as they share and move through space in unison. Many times you will see a very strong bond between dancers because of these efforts no matter how old they are.

Cognitive Development
At a young age, children understand that movement can be used as a response to an idea or problem. This creates a cognitive link to a solution or outcome. This type of cognitive development creates an awareness of how to function in the world. For example, it is very common in dance classes for children to be taught to leap over a “river” (scarf or mat) so they don’t get wet. This idea achieves several different concepts… leg extension, transferring weight, problem solving, imagination, balance, space recognition, etc. The idea is that physical expression or solutions give young ones another way to handle the world while their verbal communication develops.

Emotional Maturity
Because dancing is also an art form, children are learning how to creatively express their emotions as well. There are endless opportunities to share and be aware of various emotions as students experience one another and themselves through movement. Dance classes provide a structured outlet for a healthy physical and emotional release that helps devolop emotional maturity.

Snowflake Frolic, Sunday, December 6th

Dear Recreational Dancers/Parents

We are so happy to have you as a part of the 2015 Snowflake Frolic at International Dance Academy! This is an exciting time for our kinderdance, primary and junior recreational dancers, as for some, it will be their first time on stage!!!

The Snowflake Frolic is an annual event, not only to showcase the talent of our recreational dancers, but also as a fundraiser for our Troupe.

The Frolic will be held on Sunday, December 6th, starts at 1:30, so please have your dancer at St. Martin school by 1pm sharp. A teaching assistant will be available to escort your child backstage to get ready. No parents will be allowed in the backstage area. Your child will be brought out to the gym at the end of the performances by an assistant.

This year’s event will be a silver collection at the door. No tickets will be sold. While the venue is large, please encourage family and friends to arrive on time to ensure best seating.

We will also be collecting canned goods as donations to Christmas Cheer. We will have a box available at the door for everyone to donate items – let’s show Thunder Bay our IDA giving spirit!

We will have raffle baskets tickets and 50/50 draw tickets for sale – this is a popular part of the day and there is something for everyone in these very special prizes!

We will have a bake table of items for sale as well as beverages available at a very reasonable cost.

Finally, at the end of the event we always have some very special guests, including Santa Claus, Rudolph, Elves, the Sugar Plum Fairy, and the Snow Queen who will be available for meeting your dancers, family, and friends. We have secured a local photographer to take pictures with our special guests and they will be for sale, again, at a very reasonable cost.

We are looking forward to spending the afternoon with you at the Snowflake Frolic!
Should you have any questions about the day, please don’t hesitate to contact Katie Kuoppa-Aho, at
